Be a money savvy wedding guest: Don't go for broke

You get free cake, the happy couple gets a gift, and everyone’s bank account takes a hit. Offset the cost of attending a wedding by using these six savings tricks on the two biggest expenses:

  • Use the registry to get an idea of what the couple needs, then shop around to see if you can find the same or similar item for less. Just make sure you go back to the registry and mark the item as fulfilled.
  • A wedding gift doesn’t have to be something you buy. Instead, offer your services to the couple. You can help decorate, assemble wedding invitations or if you’re a skilled photographer, take pictures. You’ll save money, and so will the newlyweds.
  • Once you know where the couple is registered, sign up for the store’s mailing list for sales, or check out websites for coupon codes. Save even more by sticking with retailers that offer free shipping.

  • Find the airfare sweet spot by booking six weeks in advance for domestic flights and five to six months ahead for international trips. Tuesday and Wednesday morning flights are typically the best value.
  • If the couple’s suggested hotel is over your budget, look at other options nearby. You can also save money by renting a vacation home or apartment and staying with a group.
  • Pay for wedding expenses with a card that can earn you rewards points. As you accumulate points, you can redeem them for money toward airfare, gas or even hotel stays
